Tuan Guru Baba Ismail Sepanjang Al-Fathani, Fountain of Knowledge
In Patani (Fathani), Southern Thailand, the title ‘tuan guru’ is the
equivalent of ‘syeikh’, and the title ‘baba’ means father. Tuan guru
baba Ismail Sepanjang Al-Fathani or better known dearly by the people of
Southern Thailand as Baba Eil is now 56 years old (2011). His name is
Ismail bin Omar and he is the mudir (headmaster) of his own established
madrasah, Pondok Darul Muhajirin. ‘Pondok’ literally means madrasah of a
traditional-Malay style.
He holds a position as
the head of Majlis Fatwa in the Fathani council of Ulama. His path of
knowledge brought him to seek knowledge from Tuan guru Baba Haji Abdul
Latif for 6 years, and he continued to study with Tuan guru baba Haji
Abdul Qadir Sekam for 9 years. He went to further studies in Mecca for 1
year. By the age of 31, he established his own madrasah. He is blessed
with 5 children.
Baba
Eil teaches full time at his madrasah. He also teaches at Yala central
mosque and Patani mosque. His ta’lim (teaching sessions) resonates
through the local radio station and can be heard by all the locals.

It
has been the tradition of the Islamic scholars of Patani (Fathani) to
be very knowledegable, the branching field of knowledge and the deep
explaination by the teacher (Tuan guru) is amazing. Once there was a
group of professors and Phd doctors from Malaysia visiting Tuan Guru
Baba Ismail Sepanjang (Baba Eil), they were astonished to see the vast
knowledge of Islam, only to be mastered by Baba Eil alone.
